Just like humans, pets require regular dental check-ups and care, ideally every 3 to 6 months. Pets also lose their baby teeth and grow permanent ones just like children, typically between 2 and 3 months of age.
Naturally, pets should have bright white teeth and fresh breath. However, feeding them sweets or diets that disrupt their gut microbiome can trigger bad breath. When this happens, the antibacterial properties of their saliva decline, making the oral cavity highly vulnerable to infection. This leads to the buildup of thick plaque and tartar that invades the gums, causing bleeding, gingivitis, and periodontitis. If left untreated, it can progress to severe root abscesses and jaw bone inflammation, which can negatively impact their digestive and respiratory systems.
- Senior Pets (Over 5 years old): Require a periodontal check-up every 6 months to monitor and manage gum diseases.
- Geriatric Pets (Over 10 years old): Require closer monitoring with a dental check-up every 3 months.
- Puppies & Kittens (2–12 months old): Require at least one dental exam to extract retained baby teeth. Leaving these teeth can overcrowd the mouth, obstruct permanent teeth, and eventually cause root rot, decay, or premature tooth loss. This visit also evaluates their bite alignment to prevent malocclusion (misaligned teeth).
